If you feel you have been called by the Holy Spirit to follow Christ in a Franciscan vocation, you are warmly invited to 'come and see.' Our Fraternity holds our General Meeting the first Sunday of the month at Mission San Luis Rey in Oceanside, California. (Not nearby? There are other Secular Franciscan Fraternities across the US and world). Come join us, talk with us, share your story. There's no rush or pressure, but rather, a warm invitation to enter into relationship.
After visiting and you desire to proceed, you will be welcomed into a time of Orientation focusing on prayer, discernment, and just getting to know more deeply who we are and if our community is a good fit for you. If you decide God is calling you to a vocation as a Secular Franciscan at this time in your life, you may choose to enter into our official Formation program leading to Profession and a lifelong loving commitment to live the Gospel following the example of St. Francis of Assisi. Secular Franciscans model themselves after St. Francis and his fervor to live the Gospel in the world when he said, “This is what I want, this is what I seek, this is what I desire with all my heart.”
Exploring a Franciscan vocation is an ongoing process of prayerful discernment; if you feel you are called to such a vocation, we're here to help you in that process. If you'd like to be contacted about discerning a vocation with the Secular Franciscan Order, please provide your contact information on our 'Contact' page. We'd be delighted to speak with you by phone, email, or in person.
Secular Franciscans, therefore, should seek to encounter the living and active person of Christ in their brothers and sisters, in Sacred Scripture, in the Church, and in liturgical activity. From the Rule of the Secular Franciscan Order
Jan DeSpain, OFS is the Director of Formation for the San Luis Rey Fraternity of Secular Franciscans. She has served in many roles in the Secular Franciscan community, both locally and for the entire St. Francis region covering all of Southern California.
